Teaching BodyWorks

Nicole Mejia teaching the BodyWorks class last Spring

BodyWorks is yet one more program of The Next Door that you might not have heard about.  Last year, Nicole Mejia our Health Promotion Supervisor at Nuestra Comunidad Sana (NCS), was trained  as a BodyWorks facilitator, sponsored by the Office on Women’s Health.

“BodyWorks is a 10-session obesity prevention program designed to provide parents and caregivers with hands-on tools to make small, specific changes to improve their family’s eating and activity habits” (October 2010 BodyWorks Update newsletter).  This fits in nicely with the other NCS obesity prevention and physical activity promotion projects.

The first time Nicole taught the class, she was a real trooper since she was recovering from knee surgery and getting around on crutches.  We were lucky to have a local volunteer fitness instructor, Jacque Johnston, help out.

This past Fall, Nicole was featured as a trainer in the BodyWorks newsletter.  Check out this link for a nice article (article starts on page 8): http://www.womenshealth.gov/BodyWorks/newsletter/vol3iss4.pdf
